Description
Pressure injuries are a significant risk to patients in all healthcare settings. Best practices for preventing pressure injuries (PI) involve individual risk assessment tools such as the Braden scale, preventive interventions, and a solid foundation of basic skin care. The purpose of this presentation is to provide clinicians with the information needed to identify, stage, and appropriately treat pressure injuries. It will also discuss how to implement standards in clinical practice to promote good skin care, implement preventive measures for PI upon admission, and understand the importance of moisturizing the skin and repositioning patients with impaired mobility.

The WTA Program prepares participants with competencies that they can apply to their
practice immediately upon completion of the program. These competencies are assessed
through the online multiple choice and case scenario exams, as well as hands-on skills return
demonstrations. Course participants are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this educational program, the learner should be able to:
- List common sources of Medical Device Related Pressure Injuries.
- Define the etiology of pressure injury development.
- List the stages of pressure injuries.
- Differentiate the stages of pressure injuries based on inherent characteristics.
- Recognize risk factors associated with PI development
- Identify patients at risk for PI after utilizing a risk assessment tool that evaluates a patient’s risk for skin injury.
- Discuss the pathophysiology of pressure injuries to determine when the wound should be staged.
- Apply appropriate interventions to prevent pressure injuries in patient population.
- Outline wound related characteristics and PI documentation essentials.
