Description
Maintaining skin integrity has been a concern for nursing since the late-1850s during Florence Nightingale’s era. In 1859, Florence Nightingale declared “If he has a bedsore, it’s generally not the fault of the disease, but of nursing" (Ayello, 2008). Simple, basic principles are nursing’s first defense when preventing injury to the skin. When a wound care nurse is not available the staff nurse may be the first caregiver to assess changes in a patient’s skin. The purpose of this presentation is to provide the staff nurse with knowledge on basic skin assessment, identifying at-risk patients and practical guidelines the nurses can implement to protect the skin from injury.
